Shadow Man Remastered

Believe it or not, but Shadow Man is really a comic book character created by Valiant Comics in the early ’90s. He is a man imbued with voodoo-like powers, who can freely move between the world of the dead and the world of the living.

The story follows the exploits of the newest”Shadow Man”, Michael LeRoi, who had a spooky mask stitched into his ribs with a voodoo priestess, Mama Nettie. As Shadow Man, he is tasked with using his voodoo powers to protect the world from Deadside, which is apparently where everyone goes when they die without exception. One night, Nettie has a prophetic dream about someone using the “Dark Souls” to build an evil undead army and invade the Live side. It’s based on a comic series that was somewhat popular at the time, it had been reasonably well-received, and it sold enough to warrant a sequel on PS2.

Shadow Man Remastered

Changes From The Original Sport
This time around, he will explore three big new levels which were unfortunately cut from the original game. Luckily, Nightdive Studios even went so far as to rebuild some of them from scratch to produce this remaster be exactly what the original developers intended.

Truth be told, though, we’re kind of curious as to why Shadow Man was targeted for the remaster treatment. While’s the original was barely an all-time poor match, it is somewhat notable for how generally unremarkable it was. At first, the gameplay seems more optimize in this upgraded version, but that impact wears off quickly. As you navigate through a labyrinth of hellishly oversimplified environments, you can slowly shoot undead demons in the Deadside. After around five shots which seem to last an eternity, the demons finally explode into chunks of crimson gore. The action of fighting appears to slow the gameplay down to an agonizing pace. I found myself back in my own basement in 1999, wondering if I had any other games I could perform.

Shadow Man Remastered Review: Comb The Depths Of Deadside
While the story in Shadow Man Remastered is not the deepest you’ll find, it’s still considerably deeper than some other titles of the age, like Super Mario 64. The hero, Mike LeRoi, begins as a very flawed human who finds himself on a course of redemption. Jumping feels weird and considering this is a sport with a heavy emphasis on platforming, this is never a good sign. The combat has ever felt undercooked, and that is also true in this remaster. Finally, the camera, while not as poor as most games introduced back in the afternoon, is still a bit janky. Thankfully, Nightdive did include a much simpler control of the game’s camera with the right analog stick, making things a bit easier to digest.

I didn’t have a Nintendo 64, PlayStation, or even a Dreamcast though–I played mostly PC games back then. Developer Nightdive Studios has been pulling nostalgic paintings from the depths of time, and with Shadow Man getting the remaster treatment I figured this would be the ideal time to check out this beloved cult classic. The Shadow Man series began in 1992 Under the banner of Valiant Comics. Comic legends like Joe Quesada, Rob Liefied, and Frank Miller have had their hands on this series. After several years of immense popularity and over five million copies sold. Paving the way for the original Shadow Man to be published as a video game in 1999.

They still feel somewhat clunky at times but are certainly an improvement over the original game. The developers have also improved lighting/shadows and included that a number of new post-processing results and other options. Shadow Man needs to collect enough shadowy souls to achieve shadow level 6 to find the Gad being used in the previous screenshot. As you might expect, they allow you to reach previously inaccessible areas to find more goodies and secrets. At its core, it is a collect-a-thon like many other games of its age. In Super Mario 64, your objective was to collect the 120 power celebrities, or the minimum number needed to defeat Bowser and save Princess Peach.

Enemies will respawn, but only once you leave the level and come back again. This makes dying much less annoying than it would otherwise be since you often have to run back through a number of rooms to return to where you died and continue your adventure. Having enemies respawn regularly might’ve made for a good challenging mode, though. Shadow Man Remastered is an old-school-style action-platformer in a Metroidvania style. Having grown up with these genres, I have a soft spot for them.

This could possibly be an issue for some, but I still greatly enjoy the sport anyway. However, don’t consider it to mean it’s a difficult game, since overall it certainly isn’t one. Challenge is like anything else in you can have too much of a good thing. His life would require another drastic twist when one night, a dying Voodoo priestess named Mama Nettie burst into the priest’s pub.
